Agency Sets Waialua Garden Workshops

Who needs to go to the market to buy vegetables? Attendees at Waialua workshop series, “Grow Your Own Groceries,” won’t have to travel farther than their own backyards.

Oahu Resource Conservation & Development Council offers five workshops on gardening from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays beginning May 17 at DuPont Pioneer behind Waialua High and Intermediate School, off Plantation Road. Students must sign up in advance and pay a $5 fee.

Registration closes two days before the session date. Topics and dates are listed below. To register, visit backyardgardening.eventbrite.com.

May 17 – Hydroponics and Container Gardens

May 31 – Growing Vegetables and Pest Control

June 14 – Edible Landscapes: Fruit Trees

June 21 – Chickens in Your Backyard

June 28 – Building Healthy Garden Soils and Green Manure.

Because workshops are outdoors and hands-on, attendees should be prepared for sun exposure and also wear close-toed shoes.

Speakers include representatives from UH’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, The Green House and local farms.
