Emergency Veterinary Care Just ‘Four Minutes Away’

A full-service, full-time animal hospital has been steadily serving Hawaii Kai for nearly two years, including 24-hour emergency care for critical cases.

Drs. Joe and Mariel Edhlund practiced veterinary medicine in Guam for years before coming to the Islands and starting Gentle Vets Hawaii. They began in early 2010 by doing house calls, and opened their clinic at Hawaii Kai Shopping Center in late August that year.

Together with their staff of about eight, the Edhlunds’ goal is to provide emergency, routine and advanced care for pets of East Oahu residents.

According to Joe Edhlund, it’s not unusual for him and his wife to take critical-case patients home with them to provide around-the-clock care.

“One of the key things,” he explained, “is that we are available all the time – because we live four minutes away from the clinic.

“We have been well-received in the community,” he added. “This is our home.”

Besides the routine vaccinations, the Edhlunds do advanced orthopedic surgery; both are certified in total hip and knee replacements and have experience repairing fractures. Gentle Vets also offers wellness plans to control costs, and the clinic can help clients work out their budgets.

Gentle Vets Hawaii is located at 377 Keahole St. Suite E-109, behind Marina Pet Supply. Its regular hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
