‘Cop on Top’ In Kaneohe, Aikahi

If shoppers look skyward when they go out Aug. 28, 29 and 30, they might find a police officer perched on high.

Law enforcement officials have teamed up with Special Olympics Hawaii to raise money and awareness through the 13th annual Cop on Top benefit.

The off-duty police officers will spend three days sleeping and eating atop 14-foot-high scaffolding at Aikahi Park and Kaneohe Bay shopping centers, as well as at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores statewide. Passersby are encouraged to donate to Special Olympics while learning more about the program.

Cop on Top has raised more than $2,253,000 for Special Olympics Hawaii since 2001. The organization serves about 3,500 athletes a year, providing training and competitive venues in nine different sports for those with intellectual disabilities. On average, it costs the organization $865 per year to support each athlete.
