Market Opens Drive For School Supplies

With back-to-school shopping underway, Makeke Kapolei asks that families remember others who may not be able to afford school supplies for their keiki.

At this Thursday’s farmers’ and green market, organizers will be collecting donations of supplies from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Kapolei High School.

Here’s what’s needed: 3-ring binders (1-inch and 1.5-inch), folder paper, composition books, crayons, liquid glue, glue sticks, highlighter pens, manila folders, markers, watercolor paint sets, paper towel rolls, No. 2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, color pencils, portfolio folders, Post-it notes, rulers, scissors, sheet protectors, antibacterial soap bottles, clear tape, boxes of tissue, disinfectant wipes, and zipper-lock bags. The donations will be distributed to students at Kapolei-area schools.

“Students are asked to bring a long list of supplies to school, and some families simply cannot afford to get everything on the list,” explained Pauline Sato, executive and program director of Malama Learning Center, which helps coordinate Makeke Kapolei. “We want to help students have a successful school year and don’t want the lack of school supplies to affect their learning,”
