Brazilian Soccer Camp In Kailua

Brazilian soccer is coming to Kailua by way of Escola Coxa Hawaii. The newly formed program will run a Summer Soccer Camp through Windward Oahu Soccer Club June 2-6, followed by HYSA tryouts the following day.

As Escola Coxa is affiliated with Brazil’s Coritiba F.C., the coaches aim to groom pupils for competitive play either in Brazil or at the high school and college levels in the United States. “We are bringing the fundamentals, expertise, style of soccer and excitement of what we call ‘Joga bonito’ (play beautiful’),” explained WOSC coaching director Hugo Guttierez, who has traveled the world playing futebol.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kainalu Elementary School and is open to children ages 6-13. Training will emphasize the Brazilian style of playing, and coaches include former Brazilian professional players Guttierez, Alexandre Souza and Daniel Araujo. Fee is $295 (all day), $225 (9 a.m.-noon) or $65 (rate per day).

Players should bring water, lunch, sunscreen and snacks, and their own equipment, such as ball, shin guards and cleats.

HYSA tryouts are June 7, also at Kainalu Elementary. Ages 6-8 play from 9 to 10:30 a.m., ages 9-11 go from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and ages 12-16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
