Recycling Drives To Aid Area Schools, Aikido Club, Foodbank

Central Oahu residents have no excuses about spring cleaning, as they have a choice of three area recycling drives next month.

The Going Green campaign is coming to Leilehua High School April 12 and to Mililani Hongwanji Mission April 19. Both drives will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will accept canned food for Hawaii Foodbank, as well as an unlimited number of residential and commercial computers and e-waste – and one TV set per car.

Proceeds from redemption fees will benefit Leilehua High and the Mililani Ki-Aikido Club, respectively.

Going Green collects scrap metal, bicycles, appliances, HI-5 containers, cooking oil, cell phones, printers and cartridges, batteries, fire extinguishers and propane tanks (maximum of three), pet food and supplies, prom dresses, business suits and white socks (for Afghanistan).

“Everything is recycled,” coordinator Rene Mansho said, “and nothing goes to the landfill.”

Goodwill and Lions clubs can use clothing, household items, hearing aids and eyeglasses. Participants also can swap incandescent light bulbs for CFLs.

The drive cannot accept tires, paint, microwave ovens, wood or bulky items, motor oil, hazardous fluids, cardboard, paper or plastics.

For curbside pickup and free towing of unwanted cars at either event, call Mansho at 291-6151.

Kokua Hawaii Foundation also plans an Aloha Aina recycling drive from 9 a.m. to noon April 12 at Mililani Uka Elementary, 94-380

Kuahelani Ave. In partnership with Schnitzer Steel, the drive accepts most items listed above, as well as cardboard, paper and plastics. Proceeds go to the school.
