Lanikai Kids Do ‘Walking Bus’ Friday

Motorists are advised that International Walk to School Day will bring more folks onto Lanikai streets this Friday, when the community’s only school will join the campaign.

Lanikai Elementary School students, parents, teachers and invited community leaders plan to walk or bike to school starting at 7:30 a.m. from Kailua Beach Park parking area and from the boat ramp. The “walking school bus” is estimated to arrive on campus at 7:40 a.m. with encouragement from a signwaving effort and morning safety assembly sponsored by Honolulu Police Department. State Rep. Cynthia Thielen will join the march and speak at the assembly.

Organized by the school and HPD, the event seeks to raise awareness for creating safe routes for walking, bicycling and pedestrian safety while encouraging more physical activity and less cars.

“The entire community benefits when there’s less traffic,” said Lanikai’s PCNC Espie Chapman, noting that this will be the public charter school’s inaugural effort.
