Folk Music Encore In Kaneohe

Folk music is returning to Pohai Nani Retirement Community with Keith Haugen and Frank Uehara set to perform “Folk Music Lives (hana hou)” at 7 p.m. next Tuesday at Pohai Nani auditorium.

The free Oct. 16 concert will reprise their July appearance at the Kaneohe venue, where they played to a full house — of residents and the public — that clamored for more, according to Haugen.

“We did a one-hour concert, with hundreds of folks singing along and having a grand time,” recalled the award-winning musician and veteran Waikiki performer. “When they found out that we had done a two-hour benefit concert for Hawaii Public Radio, they asked us to come back to do the second half of that show.” The men have been playing to senior centers and retirement communities ever since, bringing the traditional tunes to “folks who will appreciate them most,” he added.

Expect to hear Mama Don’t Want No Peas, Time, A Little Bitty Tear (let me down), Clementine, You Are My Sunshine, Tom Dooley, Grandfather Clock and much more.

Some lyrics will be projected onto a screen for easy sing-alongs. To be sure, Pete Seeger and Burl Ives will be the silent, honored partners of the show.
