Whiplash

Overall, what did you think?

Mixed feelings. As a musician, it took me awhile to get comfortable with the progression of the story. Some of the scenes were hyped up and very intense. J.K. Simmons was excellent as an “in your face” music teacher, Mr. Fletcher.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?

The dinner table scene with the family. Everyone basically ignored that the main character Andrew (played by Miles Teller) was busting his behind to become a better drummer and to earn a seat in the advanced studio band.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?

★★ 1/2. The subject matter may not be of interest to the majority, but the artsy folk like me should be able to appreciate this body of work.

What did you think of the cinematography?

I thought it worked well, pretty straightforward with not having to deal with CG or special effects. Couple of scenes gave me a jolt!

Was the message/theme clear?

Mixed feelings on this one, too. I guess one can go too far where support and encouragement turns into abuse.

Did it remind you of any other works of film?

Good thing I brought my wife along. She says it’s kind of like Black Swan.

Who would you recommend this movie to?

Anyone who can relate to the struggle and dedication it takes to perfect one’s craft.

Did any of the actors stand out?

Yes, J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller, who really do play drums!

Did you identify with any of the characters?

Yes, the main character, Andrew. It takes a lot of effort to reach your goals in music and even more to maintain it.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?

Of course, being that this movie was about a musician, lots of references to past jazz greats like my favorite, Buddy Rich.

Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD?

No, not a movie you’d want to watch repeatedly.

What’s your favorite movie snack?

M&M’s with peanuts!

On a different note, what’s new with you?

We released a Hawaiian-style band CD this past summer produced by Wade Cambern and myself. It features Wade and a very talented vocalist, Tani Lynn. Also, I will be the drummer for more shows with the great sax man Michael Paulo, including the fantastic smooth jazz concert Dec. 6, “Sax for Christmas,” featuring Jessy J, Marion Meadows, Michael Lington and Michael Paulo at The Magic of Polynesia Showroom in Waikiki. Tickets are available at TIX.com. See you at the gigs!
