Resort Hosts Makahiki Kuilima

New Year’s celebrations aren’t only about fireworks and mochi pounding, as Turtle Bay Resort will prove by hosting its second annual Makahiki Kuilima from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 17.

The free event has traditional makahiki competitions, such as hukihuki (tug of war), ‘ulu maika (lawn bowling), uma (arm wrestling), heihei kukini (foot racing), ‘o‘o ihe (spear throwing) and hula, as well as artisans, crafters, educational exhibits, cultural demonstrations and performances.

Makahiki Kuilima is presented by Naepuni Aloha, a parent group of Ke Kula ‘o Samuel M. Kamakau, a Kaneohe-based P-12 school dedicated to Hawaiian language and culture. The Turtle Bay celebration is the last in a series of makahiki events held by the group.
