Market City 65 Years Strong

By Sandra Au Fong, Vice President of Market City Shopping Center

Sixty-five years ago, Market City Shopping Center opened, beginning a tradition of offering the Kaimuki, Kapahulu and Moiliili communities great shopping and dining experiences and a friendly, local place where neighbors could gather.

As Hawaii’s oldest family-owned shopping center, we are proud to be home of the first Foodland in the state, our first tenant also marking 65 years in 2013. Over the years we’ve had a diverse and eclectic mix of tenants including longstanding businesses such as Gina’s BBQ, Torito’s Mexican Food, Hair Images, Ben Franklin Crafts and Fun Factory, along with specialty stores like Fujioka’s Wine Times, Formaggio Wine Bar, Café Kaila, Duck Lee and T-Mobile. And on this anniversary year, we will welcome a couple of new tenants, including Canton Dim Sum and a new restaurant to Hawaii serving authentic Japanese cuisine.

We feel we have been successful because we honor our past while looking toward the future. Market City Shopping Center grew from a 3.5-acre vegetable patch long before there were computers or even color TVs. Yet, on this 65th anniversary, we are embracing new technology by sponsoring an exciting prize giveaway later this summer as part of a social media campaign. We will be giving away 65 prizes throughout the summer from our wonderful array of tenants. Over eight weeks, prize winners will be selected from our current and new Facebook fans. So be sure to “like” us on Facebook for a chance to win and stay updated on the latest events and specials! Earlier this year we gave away a trip to Vegas as part of a Facebook promotion.

For 65 years, you have been part of our ohana and we have been part of yours. We have been honored to support many fine community groups and organi-zations, and through the Market City Foundation, have provided more than $100,000 in student scholarships.

We look forward to serving our community for the next 65 years!
