Kapolei Middle School student Danica Gadiano, 12, recently earned worldwide success in the American Society of Safety Engineers’ “Safety on the Job” poster contest.

A seventh grader, she placed second in the 11-to 12-year-old division in a contest that received more than 1,700 submissions from around the world.

Kapolei Middle School officials said that Gadiano’s inspiration for her art was her father, who is a construction worker. She hopes that her father practices safety on the job so that he can come home to her and her family each night.

The contest is designed to teach children about the importance of being safe at work, as well as educate them about what occupational safety, health and environmental professionals do to prevent injuries and illnesses.

This marks the second consecutive year that a poster designed by a Kapolei Middle School student has placed in the contest. Last year, Andy Yu won second place in the 13- to 14-year-old division.
