Hirono Nominates Windward Students To Military Academies

Nine Windward Oahu youths have been nominated to U.S. service academies by U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono.

Her office announced the recommendations last month, in order for them to be considered for final appointments for the 2013 fall semester.

“I nominate these young women and men with great pride as they collectively represent the finest qualities Hawaii has to offer,” said Hirono, who will move to a U.S. Senate seat next month: “intelligence, dedication and commitment combined with the aloha and ‘can do’ spirit, I know they’ll bring to their future endeavors.”

The nominees are: * U.S. Air Force Academy – Sydney Louise Forsyth of Kailua (Punahou School) and Gabriel Yarbrough of Kailua (Kalaheo High)

* U.S. Merchant Marine Academy – Jacob Lockwood of Kaneohe (HCC and homeschooled)

* U.S. Military Academy at West Point – William Bowers of Kailua (Punahou), Philip Bretz of Kailua (Trinity Christian), and Sijing Qiu of Kaneohe (Punahou)

* U.S. Naval Academy – Shon Cagungun of Kailua (Kalaheo), Nicholas VanDerKamp of Kailua (Kalaheo) and Joseph Yokoi of Kaneohe (UH Manoa and Kamehameha).
