Hearing Today On Koolauloa Plan

The city Planning Commission comes to the Windward side today (March 6) to take public testimony on the revised Koolauloa Sustainable Communities Plan.

The public hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Hale Akoakoa 101 and 103 at Windward Community College, where residents can comment on the new version of the plan, which offers policies and guidelines for decisions on zoning and public and private sector investments in the area from roughly Kaaawa to Turtle Bay (Koolaupoko to Kawela).

The document is slated to replace the original 1990 plan, and some issues have split the community. Concerns include proposed Malaekahana housing, the growth of Turtle Bay Resort, the fate of Kahuku Golf Course, expansion at BYU-Hawaii, a mauka connector road, the Army’s Kahuku Training area, and “rural community commercial centers” in Kaaawa (existing) and Malaekahana (proposed).

The draft plan is available online at honoluludpp.org/planning or at Kahuku Library. For details on written testimony, call the commission at 768-8007.
