Trouble With the Curve
MOVIE REVIEW with JENN BONEZA Reporter/On-air Talent, OC16 as told to Nicole Kato
Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I took my husband (Greg Solatorio) and our two boys, Devak (10) and Raven (8), with me to Consolidated on Ward to see the film. We always try to do something together on the weekends since our weekdays are so hectic, so this was our family night out.
Overall, what did you think?
Honestly, I was expecting it to be better. For the most part, I did enjoy the film, but it dragged a little at times. Clint Eastwood (as Gus Lobel) and Amy Adams (as Mickey Lobel) were believable, and I thought their performances were very well done, but I was less than impressed with Justin Timberlake (as Johnny Flanagan). I thought his acting was sub-par.
Although the film does have a good deal of baseball in it, it’s not really what I’d consider a “baseball movie.” My husband (who usually grumbles when I make him go to a non-action film) said he thought it was an OK movie.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?
My favorite part of the film was when Phillip Anderson (Matthew Lillard) and Bo Gentry (Joe Massingill) were put in their place and proven wrong.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?
I would give this film 1/2.
What did you think of the cinematography?
There weren’t any scenes in this film that visually took my breath away. It didn’t look bad, but it didn’t stand out either.
Was the message/theme clear?
The film is really a story about relationships, specifically that of a father (Gus) and daughter (Mickey). As the story unfolds, you understand why there is so much tension between them, and as the film goes along you see how they learn to accept each other and change.
Who would you recommend this movie to?
I might suggest it to my mother. This film is for anyone who likes touching, family drama-type movies.
I wouldn’t suggest bringing kids to this film though. Once the film was over, my boys said they liked it, but they complained they were bored about halfway through it.
Did any of the actors stand out?
I am a big Clint Eastwood fan and look forward to seeing any film he is involved with. His character was believable, and his acting terrific (as expected).
Matthew Lillard’s character, Phillip Anderson, was despicable and sneaky and done very well. I hated him the entire movie – which was the point of his role as the antagonist.
Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?
Not really. Although, the song You Are My Sunshine was used several times in the film. Both Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams’ characters sang parts of the song in the movie.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
My favorite movie snack is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but I try not to eat them.
What’s new with you?
Our prep sports season is in full gear at OC16 (now on Oceanic channel 12), and you can catch me on the sidelines for our live football broadcasts every Friday night.
I’m also busy producing stories for Inside OC16 Sports, now in its third season on OC16. Tune in every Monday at 6:30 p.m. to catch the show. My next story, featuring four Kahuku football players involved with their school’s show choir, Vocal Motion, will air Oct. 8 during Inside OC16 Sports.
