dents could choose to take personal action, inspire others to take action with them, or they could reach out to an organization or an elected official with their idea(s),” states LJA science teacher Erin Tseu. “These two teams chose to apply for a grant to try and raise funding for their action ideas.”
Of the seven teams nationwide selected to advance, two teams rep- resent LJA: Evan Smyth and Alexa Scherman of Team Pono Pōpoki, who explore strategies to protect native Hawaiian birds in their film, and Kar- ly-Marie Dias and Hailey Peterson of Team No Plastic, No Problem, whose film explores how to reduce plastic on campus.
Both LJA teams will now prepare and share final presentations with a panel of expert judges and the pub- lic at 7 a.m. Hawai‘i Standard Time on May 25 during EarthEcho’s Face- book Live event. The top three Amer- ican teams will be awarded grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to turn their projects into reality. Voting for the People’s Choice Awards is now open, and all community members can vote until May 25 at forms.gle/ U6WJcCCA2618bbm37.
