Kailua’s Ka‘ōhao Public Charter School Earns Robotics Award
Kaʻōhao Public Char- ter School in Kailua won the Build Award at the re- cent 2023 VEX IQ Robot- ics State Championships, sponsored by Hawaiian Electric.

the efforts of HSGC have been focused on the public, particularly teachers and students in all grade lev- els. HSGC offers various remote and in-person train- ings and workshops for coaches, teachers and stu- dents, developing a robot- ics curriculum for STEM/ robotics classes, and men- tor teachers and students in rookie robotics programs.
VEX Robotics is an ed- ucational robotics program that inspires students to excel in STEM principles while encouraging cre- ativity, teamwork, leader- ship and problem solving among groups. This season there were 250 registered teams and more than 900 students. Robotics compe- titions foster these skills and prepare students to be- come future innovators as well as increase their inter- est in pursuing STEM ca- reers. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional,
state and national levels, and culminate in the VEX Robotics World Champi- onship. There are approxi- mately 20,000 teams from 45 countries participating in VEX tournaments.
Locally, Hawaiʻi Space Grant Consortium oversees the Hawaiʻi VEX Robotics Competitions with fund- ing through University of Hawaiʻi Foundation. Ex- panded opportunities for space education through
