JUNE 29, 2022
    Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
We’ve passed the Hawai‘i summer solstice of June 20 this year — which just happened to fall on the new Juneteenth federal hol- iday. It’s very cool. We cel- ebrated freedom, surf and summer around the islands. Yes, it is 100% officially summer.
youth have these days. The talent pool has never been this deep.
ly. Big Wave Guardians also shares the near-death stories of many, and actual death, like the loss of big-wave surfer Sion Milosky.
There are Hawai‘i’s most notable lifeguards, includ- ing Ahue, Clyde Aikau, Mark Cunningham, Dave Wassel and Johnny Angel.
The forecast rocked last week and there’s more to come. The north, west, south and east shores all had waves. Take a look at the latest surfnewsnetwork.com forecast.
This tier one world qual- ifying event is set up to help regional surfers have a fair shot — those who may not be able to afford com- peting in a high-priced surf travel lifestyle. This levels the playing field with equal chances from their own country and region. It’s a great idea — and it came out of a pandemic — out of ne- cessity, which is the mother of invention.

Throughout the show there’s an amazing cast of some of the world’s best watermen and women: 11- time world champion Kelly Slater, and big-wave char- gers Mark Healey, Greg Long and Keala Kennelly.
Don’t miss witnessing the true life-saving stories from top surfers who wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for these courageous big wave guardians.

Documentary Shares How Watermen Push Limits
There are just over 40 world qualifying contests around the globe with more than 500 frothing and gift- ed surfers. Their top five results are counted toward the Challenger Series. Only about 60 men and 45 wom- en make it in.
The movie also shares the next evolution of safety in numbers, the formation of the Big Wave Risk As- sessment Group in 2011. The more regular surfers and ocean sports enthusiasts know how to save lives and not panic, the safer and bet- ter for all.
They discuss the risks of surfing these life-threatening waves and the role of our lifeguards, especially on the North Shore.

We kicked off a regional world qualifying event at Ala Moana Bowls in 3-foot surf on June 19. It’s called the Priority Destinations Pro presented by First Hawaiian Bank and Mastercard.
I’ll have the results at the Priority Destinations Pro, presented by First Hawaiian Bank, as soon as they come in.
This is so cool to have a big brand jump in and help our aspiring local pros attain their dreams of traveling the globe on the World Champi- onship Tour. How awesome, just getting the chance to go up against some of Ha- wai‘i’s best.
Next up — the Big Wave Guardians documentary is in theaters. It premiered at Hawai‘i Theatre June 21. This is a do-not-miss 90-minute show.

From here, our local tal- ents hope to get on the Chal- lenger Series, which is the middle tier just before the big WCT. It’s crazy to think how hard it is just getting there. Then, the real work begins in the tour.
You’ll be inspired by our lifeguards and surfers who push the limits. It focuses on the mecca of surfing, the 7-mile stretch known as the North Shore. But the story goes well beyond our shores. It’s a story of risk and re- ward, life and death — and how lifeguards and training can make the difference be- tween the extremes.
