• RECYCLING A 3Rs school recycling drive will be held 9-11 a.m. Feb. 19 at ‘Āhui- manu Elementary School (47-470 Hui Aeko Place) in Kāne‘ohe. Only residential materi- als will be taken: no commercial or govern- ment drop-offs allowed. Items accepted in- clude scrap metals, electronics, confidential documents for shredding, household goods, cooking oils, renovation materials, and HI-5 aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles. The program was short on funds at the end of the year due to COVID-19, while at the same time the state Department of Edu- cation-mandated free lunch meant more food waste for the staff to collect and compost. The program will need at least $50,000 to re- main alive for the rest of the school year.
Members add that the hui is also an award-winning and nationally acclaimed organization earning five Environmental Protection Agency awards for both in- novation and scientific data collection, as well as sev- eral Gardening of America awards.
