to play this game of basket- ball: offense, defense, team- work and more,” he says. “Improving the win-loss record is everyone’s goal, and winning is the common denominator. We have some great student-athletes here in Kāne‘ohe and they will have the opportunity to em- brace a new system of how we will play basketball at Castle. Besides embracing basketball skills, the stu- dent-athletes will also have the opportunity to embrace our team and life rules.”
and coach to the incredible coaches and mentors that I’ve had over the years on this journey,” Silva says.
A Kāne‘ohe resident for more than 30 years, Silva learned last month that the Castle High School varsity basketball head coaching position was available. The veteran skipper had tradi- tionally coached schools and teams in town, but decid- ed to give back to his local communitythistimearound. He applied for the position and was “very fortunate to be offered the job.”
After graduating from Chaminade with a bache- lor’s degree in education and following that up with a master’s degree in education focusing on counseling and guidance from University of Hawai‘i,Silvamadethenat- ural transition into coaching at the schools he ended up teaching and counseling at.

Silva’s 40-plus-year coaching journey has tak- en him to a diverse array of destinations, including high school coaching stints at ‘Iolani, Campbell, Kai- ser, McKinley, Maryknoll, Farrington (three OIA and two state championships) and Saint Louis; college coaching runs at Chaminade and Hawai‘i Loa College as well as the uber-competitive Hawai‘i College Summer League; and Yes I Can Bas-
Silva explains that as he stood at half court with Cas- tle’s junior varsity and varsity basketball squads, he impart- ed the “meaning” of being part of the Knights program. He uses the KNIGHTS ac- ronym: K, keep your dreams alive; N, never give up; I, imagine the possibilities; G, gratitude; H, hustle; T, think; and S, see yourself achieving your goals.
Silva also teaches his stu- dent-athletes to embrace the “aloha spirit” law, designated as Hawai‘i Revised Statute 5-7.5. The statute conveys that each person must “think and emote good feelings to others,” and is built on five character traits that form ALOHA: Akahai, kindness to be expressed with ten- derness; Lōkahi, unity to be expressed with harmony; ‘Olu‘olu, agreeable to be
expressed with pleasantness; Ha‘aha‘a, humility to be ex- pressed with modesty; and Ahonui, patience to be ex- pressed with perseverance.
I know, and people that I meet for the first time who are looking forward to the growth of the basketball pro- gram. Also, the support of the students, parents and staff at Castle, including teach-
ers, the athletic director and administration, trainers and coaches have been outstand- ing. It is a privilege and hon- or to have the opportunity to work in my community with our future leaders!”
