hile the traditional Kāne‘ohe Christmas parade is on an in- definite hiatus due to health
and safety concerns around the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a grassroots com- munity group is continuing a new holiday tradition geared toward spreading cheer safely.
The hui called Kāne‘ohe Christmas was formed last year to connect the communi- ty in a safe and responsible manner, and perpetuate holiday celebrations. The lo- cal group helps to coordinate with fellow community organizations, city officials and other government representatives to disseminate the proper information and ensure safety guidelines are met.
“The concept started among friends when we learned the parade was can- celed,” says Adriel Lam, one of the event organizers who requested to form a permitted interaction group via the Kāne‘ohe Neighborhood Board. “There are also many other Christmas traditions
