 Kāne‘ohe Resident, 107 Shares Her Secrets To Longevity

Beatrice Murayama has more than a century’s worth of memories to share. Among her favorites include tripping the light fantastic with her husband, Robert.
“According to her care- givers, she is the Queen of Longevity,” states her daughter, Gail Woliver.
Her favorite pastimes included shopping, doing word search magazines, watching Days of our Lives and teaching her parakeet to talk and kiss.
“(We) took ballroom dancing classes with friends at Ala Wai Clubhouse,” she reminisces.
“There are not many living elders over the age of 105. This has allowed our family time for a long, gradual goodbye, for which we are grateful.”
“I like playing with small dogs — but caring for them daily, not so much,” she as- serts.

“Practicing at hotels, all dressed up, me in silver high heels, rhinestone dangly earrings, a sequined hal- ter dress, that was the best! Robert couldn’t keep time, but he threw himself happily into any dance style, and that made it fun.”
“I’m happy, that’s the secret,” states Murayama, when asked for her secret to longevity.
Murayama knew how to keep herself looking put-to- gether, but also how to do it without breaking the bank.
“I shall long remember her as a self-taught seamstress who made sure I was beauti- fully dressed, a culinary chef and a fiercely independent woman, who even (when she was) 92 insisted on taking the bus to the market and hauling a grocery bag in each hand up to her condo,” Woliver states.
This month, Murayama celebrates her 107th birth- day and her family is eager
