“This allows us to serve as a repository and provide our partners and hospitals on the mainland with those blood types upon request, es- pecially JK3-negative — one of the world’s rarest blood types that is extremely rare in the U.S., but more common among Pacific Islanders, 1 in 100, or 0.9%.”
“We are appreciative of
Windward Mall’s manage- drives,” Lewis says.
Your donation can save up to three lives.”
 On average, Blood Bank of Hawai‘i aims to secure at least 200 donors a day state- wide. This enables the orga- nization to maintain a stable inventory, as on average, 250 units per day are ordered and delivered to its hospital partners.
He notes that about 3% of Hawai‘i’s population is Type O-negative, and it is in the highest demand because it can be accepted by every- one. Likewise about 39% of Hawai‘i residents are Type O-positive, which can be used for anyone with a posi- tive blood type — about 80% of Hawai‘i’s population.
“Due to the pandemic, we’ve had to curtail our mo- bile and community opera- tions, limiting blood drives primarily to our four O‘ahu locations and one neighbor island visit per month,” Lew- is explains, adding that the organization aims to encour- age summertime donations with soon-to-be announced partnerships with Special Olympics Hawai‘i and Ha- wai‘i Building & Construc- tion Trades Council.
Lewis says that the goal is to have at least 30 donors a day at the Windward Mall location.
So, Windward O‘ahu resi- dents who are in good health, 18 years or older (or 16-17, with signed consent from a parent or guardian), weigh 110 pounds or more and have a valid photo ID are eligible to donate. (Blood Bank Hawai‘i also requires that donors pass a health screening before entering the donation site.)
While May is designated Asian American and Pacif- ic Islander Heritage Month, highlighting the needs and contributions of the AAPI community is a ongoing ef- fort for Blood Bank of Ha- wai‘i.
“Kāneʻohe donors are valued not only for their dedication, but also for their relatively high percentage of uncommon blood types, such as Type O blood,” he says, adding that if someone is unsure of their blood type, donating blood is an ideal way to find out.
“Because Hawai‘i is known to be a melting pot of cultures, we have the honor of collecting donations from a diverse range of donors;
