gradual, positive transfor- mations have begun to take place with a return of more native fish and honu to the area — thanks to our tire- less volunteers working to restore what was desperately depleted, and the wonderful support of our community.”
They invite the commu- nity to “Celebrating Limu” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24. The festivities are free with park admission, with additional add-on activities available.
“The positive impact of native limu on the marine ecosystem, and its impor- tance in local culture, cannot be understated,” states Sea Life Park general manager Valerie King.
Volunteers nurture the limu in the park and some of it is also harvested to feed the park’s honu, providing a sustainable cycle for the turtle breeding and conser- vation program.
Waimānalo Limu Hui’s motto is to Restore Limu, Restore Pāhonu and Restore Community. The organiza- tion emphasizes that limu is one of the foundations of the food chain in the ocean and that increasing the produc- tion of limu in the bay helps contribute to a thriving ma- rine ecosystem. Pāhonu fish- pond is an extension of that vision, restoring the coast- line to its fruitful past while gathering the community in unity.
The occasion will feature a variety of themed activi- ties, during which children and adults can learn about the crucial role that limu (al- gae) plays in healthy marine environments and within Hawaiian culture.
“Increasing awareness for the work of the Waimānalo Limu Hui and respect for limu in the oceans will help ensure that future genera- tions can benefit from the restored beauty and balance that these specialized con- servation efforts provide,” King adds.
Operating under the non- profit organization Ke Kula Nui O Waimānalo, the Hui is restoring limu previously abundant in Hawai‘i waters with the guidance of kūpuna and others.

Partnership representa- tives share that invasive alien algae have become a problem for native limu that fish, invertebrates and turtles like to feed on.
