After the world shut down in 2020, our lives changed dramatically, and student achievement was social- ly distanced using remote learning. But learning and student achievement does not — and should not — ex- ist in a vacuum. While we celebrate the achievement of our newest class of grad- uates (congratulations, class of 2022!), I would like to in- stead shine the Second City Spotlight on Kapolei Middle School’s Po‘okela awardees.

Po‘okela Awards: The West’s Best Of The Best
The Po‘okela Awards were founded by former KMS principal Bruce Naguwa and funded by a grant from James Campbell Co. Since its inception, the Po‘okela Awards have been an annual event. The pandemic, how-

Final recognition was giv- en to Darric Abe, Asa Parks, Caitylyn Amber Roldan, Apollo Ronsen Sunga, Blake Tesoro and Shayna Watarida as Kulia I Ka Nu‘u winners for maintaining a 4.0 GPA all three years at KMS. Ms. Wilson and Ms. Young also deserve recognition as they played a major role in our students’ achievements while celebrating in-person that evening.
their hard work and dedica- tion — and to the parents for their relentless support. But my biggest thanks and con- gratulations are to our KMS teachers, administrators and staff, not only for their tire- less and thankless dedica- tion, but for bringing back the tradition of the Po‘okela Awards so that we can right- ly and safely recognize the outstanding work of our stu- dents.

On May 18, I had the privilege of welcoming back the proud tradition of KMS’ Po‘okela Award ceremo- ny, during which we hon- ored 183 students for being po‘okela — the best of the best. While most students were recognized for their academic achievements, additional recognition for achievements in STEM, art and literature were also on the menu.
