  Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
We enjoyed one of the best months of May for southern exposures in recent memory.
The grand finale was the last two episodes of May. As of this writing, we are expect- ed to be pumping at advisory levels — possibly near warn- ing levels of 10-to-15-foot faces. This second swell is expected to build the last cou- ple days of May and last the first few days of June. Note that I’m always talking about peak heights at the peak of the swell, not averages. This puts safety first.

We had to wait till May 17 for the next average 3-foot south, then by May 20 it was upto4feetand5feetforfo- cal reefs — those reefs that magnify the deep-water swell when they finally push off the shallows.
It’s fun and interesting to note that for decades we usually have a Mother’s Day swell but not this year. I guess Mother Nature delivered all
In a nutshell, short board pro surfing has three tiers or levels: The regional Qualify- ing Series (WQS), the new Challenger Series (CS) and the World Championship Tour (WCT).
The ladies’ final was won by Portugal’s Teresa Bon- valot — Rip Curl Team rider — who out surfed Australia’s Nikki Van Dijk. Hawai‘i’s top performance went to Keala Tomoda-Bannert, who lost to Bonvalot. Congrats to all the
Special kudos to local tal- ents Brodi Sale — who lost to Waida, the winner of the contest — and Imaikalani DeVault — who lost to run- ner-up in the event Callinan
Then, the big final result was Hawai‘i’s North Shore local Honolua Blomfield tak- ing top longboarding honors by taking out Brazil’s Chloe Calmon in the last few min- utes of the heat.

Surprising Spring Swells; Surfing Updates From Oz
On the World Tour, we had super fun contests in Sydney, Australia, at a beach named Manly Beach.
On the men’s side was Bali’s Rio Waida taking out the in-form goofy footed Aussie Ryan Callinan — a huge upset. Callinan was near- ly unbeatable and has plenty of years on the WCT. I’m go- ing to claim that Waida will make it onto the WCT 2023 Dream Tour. This is huge and historic for Indonesia.
