APRIL 20, 2022
    Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
We’ve ridden past mid-April and wow, it’s been a great month.
Onward with events — the world tour just finished day two as of this writing in the land down under for the 59th Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia. It’s about 50 miles southwest of Mel- bourne and 20 hours ahead of Hawai‘i.
The defending 2019 champs are our very own prodigy John John Florence — he’s so good they had to name him twice — plus, Cal- ifornia’s powerhouse Court- ney Conlogue. The event was postponed the last couple years, so 2022 is extra spe- cial.

Now, don’t feel pressured. This event is just for fun, fel- lowship and learning. There’s going to be about 350 kids ages 3-12 years young join- ing in the action. You never know who might find their competitive passion and life’s calling.

This is the longest-running surfing event in the world, dating back to the Bells Beach Easter Classic in 1973 — yes, next year will be 50. The water temperature is a chilly 65-ish and the line up is big and broad like Sunset Beach — complicated by tides and winds.
Many pro surfers feel that this Bells trophy is the most coveted. It’s got the iconic list of all the illustrious win- ners for nearly half a century, plus all the surf stories and culture to go along.
This is another event that had to take the COVID break for two years but now the keiki are ready to crank. In- deed, our youth are frothing toshowandtell—asweall celebrate our blessings of family, friends and surfing.
“I am so excited to bring back our Grom Contest in-person and on the beach at Waikīkī. Our team pivoted
