she would be. And I just re- call her always being there, cheering me on,” she says. “Your presence is important for your kids. They won’t remember what you gave them on their birthday, but rather, they’ll remember the fact that you were there for them.”
not just about you. Think about your fellow man and add value to life.”
She credits her own moth- er, Loke Young, as her guid- ing force. Young survived an abusive relationship with Ho’s father, and she moved them from Waimānalo to Kailua when Ho was 10 years old.
Ho is being celebrated alongside mothers from across the United States. This recognition from the American Mother of the Year organization began in 1935 as a way to com- mend inspirational mothers from each state who exhibit “unconditional love, inner strength and courage,” ac- cording to the mission on its website. From there, nomi- nees have the option of ap- plying for National Mother of the Year.
“A two-person income is hard here, and then a one-person income is just impossible. However, my mom did it. But we strug- gled,” she says.
It actually wasn’t until Ho became a teen mother that she was able to fully realize the scale of her appreciation for her own mother.

“When I had a daughter, I finally realized the strength of a woman. In retrospect, I
see everything that my mom went through, everything that she had to deal with, and our relationship actual-
ly blossomed even though I was a teen mom,” Ho recalls. “Growing to know her as a woman — and everything
that she stands for, it was just amazing. She is my queen, and she will forever be that.”
