UH West O‘ahu Food Program Receives Large Donation
The University of Hawai‘i– West O‘ahu Sustainable Com- munity Food Systems pro- gram was gifted $1 million, and its all thanks to the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
“The Hawai‘i Institute for Sustainable Community Food Systems is intended to be a decentralized food system transformation hub that is grounded in comple- mentary STEM disciplines and informed by commu- nity needs and indigenous knowledge and practice,” states Albie Miles, assis- tant professor of sustainable community food systems at UH West Oʻahu.
According to the Kapo- lei college, the funds will go toward undergraduate and public education, col- laborative research, and communications and plan- ning activities to enhance the long-term sustainability and resilience of Hawai‘i’s food system by creating a new Hawai‘i Institute for Sustainable Community Food Systems.
“By coordinating strate- gic partnerships, new edu- cational programs, applied research, planning and policy analysis, we aim to make lasting change in the health, equity, resilience and sustainability of our food system.”
It will also provide schol- arships and professional development opportunities for Native Hawaiian and underrepresented students in higher education.
