A new federal rule under the Marine Mammal Pro- tection Act went into effect Oct. 28. The law now further protects the spinner dolphin population in Hawaiian wa- ters from disturbance from human interaction. In short, you are not allowed to ap- proach or swim with a spin- ner dolphin within 50 yards. The details of the new rule are stricter than the previous vague wording, and viola- tions are punishable by hefty fines. The full rule is avail- able at federalregister.gov.

of directors of the National League of Cities at its 2021 virtual City Summit. “It is truly humbling to have been re-elected to the board,” states Elefante. “It is an honor to represent Hawai‘i as the organization strength- ens ties with members of Congress and key national, regional and city leaders for the benefit of all we serve” ... First Insurance Co. of Hawai‘i recently partnered up with nonprofit Sustain- able Coastlines Hawai‘i to remove marine debris and trash from three local beaches, including One‘ula Beach Park. The company also surprised SCH with a $3,000 donation. “We want to thank First Insurance for changing up their holiday
traditions to make an im- pact with us,” states Rafael Bergstrom, SCH executive director. “When volunteers come out to a beach clean- up, they take away valuable lessons that will help to fight the causes and effects of plastic pollution so we can keep our coastlines clean” ... It features interviews with surfers Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton, and is narrated by Mākaha native Jason Momoa (who was recently on island filming Aquaman 2). personally witnessed the ex- ponential increased pressure for close interactions with the spinner dolphins both commercially and recre- ationally. As a company, we have an obligation to help protect the animals and eco- system that we benefit from, and we support the adjust- ment to the law. Just like the humpback whales and Ha- waiian monk seals, the spin- ner dolphins can be admired and fully appreciated from a respectable distance, with- out swimming with them.
My hope is that the lo- cal community also under- stands visitors are watching their example. If one person swims toward a pod of rest- ing spinner dolphins, then others will also disregard the law and expect their ac-

Unlike the 11 other spe- cies of dolphins that can be found in Hawaiian waters, the resident spinner dolphins consistently feed at night and come to shallow waters (less than 100 feet) during the daytime to rest. This pre- dictable behavior typically makes this species easier to find, therefore making them more vulnerable to stress from human encounters.
