SEPTEMBER 15, 2021
    Aloha surfers and beachgo- ers,
Right about the time you might be reading this, our best surf- ers on planet Earth will be in sunny Southern California’s San Clemente at a surf spot called Trestles. The contest is the Rip Curl World Surf League Finals.
contest is also much more demand- ing, as it is now, for the first time, the last event of the year (not Pipeline). Plus, the Trestles contest will deter- mine the 2021 world champ.
Stephanie Gilmore, Australia’s sev- en-time world champ, at No. 4, and Johanne Defay of France rounding out the top five.
her fourth title to complement her Olympic gold, making this year her best ever by far. Yet, anyone can win this thing, even these newcomers to the table. If Cibilic of Australia wins the contest, he’ll be the first rookie ever to earn a title. If Medina wins, it will be his third title, surpassing John John Florence. If Defay wins, it will be her first and the first WSL championship for France. If Gilmore wins her eighth world title, she will create a new women’s world record. Right now, she ties Layne Beachley of Australia with seven.

Following The Fantastic World Surf League Finals
The break is a cobblestone, sand-bottom combo that makes for some of the world’s most high-per- formance surf hands-down. It’s never threatening in size or pow- er, but what is threatening is that it “exposes” the best surfers. Their full repertoire is mandatory: carves and airs with ludicrous speed, power and flow — not to forget supreme wave choice — and nerve control. This

It’s a bit of a mind bender but here goes — Heat one: it’s No. 5 versus No. 4 ranked surfers, the winner goes against No. 3 in heat two. Then, it’s No. 2 ranked versus the winner of heat three. Next, it’s the winner of that third heat going against the world’s No. 1 ranked in heats four, five and six. Indeed, the last two

Finally, the format is totally new. We’ve never seen any pivot close to this by the WSL. Our top 10 WCT talents — the top five ranked women and top five men — will be on-hand Sept. 9-17 for the holding period for this epic one-day event, which is a first, too. Women will start off and alternate heats with men all day.
The men, in order, are reigning world champ and No. 1 Gabriel Me- dina, Italo Ferreira at No. 2, Filipe Toledo at No. 3 — all three of Brazil — with California’s Conner Coffin at No. 4 and Australia’s rookie Mor- gan Cibilic at No. 5.
The women, in order of ranking are, reigning world champ Carissa Moore, the favorite, at No. 1, Tatia- na Weston-Webb, a Kaua‘i resident representing Brazil, at No. 2, Sally Fitzgibbons of Australia at No. 3,
competitors will have three heats. The one who wins two-out-of-three is the new world champ. Whoa.
I’m so stoked! See you at snnha- waii.com and back here next week.
Notable notes: Moore could win
