he year 2020 proved to be challeng- ing for everyone, but it was also one of new learning opportunities at Uni-
versity of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu. Last fall, UHWO unveiled an exciting portfolio of academic offerings to address Hawaiʻi’s spe- cific challenges and issues. Among the addi- tions were two new certificates: in Hawaiian and Indigenous Health and Healing, and in Sustainability Issues.
Dr. Kau‘i Merritt, assistant professor of indigenous health sciences, teaches the Cer- tificate in Hawaiian and Indigenous Health and Healing. The coursework offers an op- portunity for nontraditional students and current health care professionals to focus on Native Hawaiian traditional practices. Ultimately, she hopes students can use what they learn to help eliminate health disparities in underserved communities through a col- laboration between traditional and Western medicine.
