Hawai‘i’s Carissa Moore Brings Back Gold To The 808
It’s quite a coincidence that, at the time of this writ- ing, surfing’s big Olympic debut just finished up (Mon- day, July 26, in Hawaiʻi).
I’ll have more surf sto- ries here in MidWeek’s West Oʻahu Voice and, of course, daily surf updates at snnha- waii.com.
separate the 50th state for obvious reasons, though it has been a long-time tra- dition within our “sport of kings” to give the Aloha State unique status: the best, most challenging waves; the birthplace of surfing; Duke Kahanamoku, etc.)
At any rate, it’s still a win-win for the USA and Hawaiʻi. In fact, having surfing in the Olympics is a win for the entire sports world. Surfing requires su- perb balance, strength and power. Exacting technique, skill, cunning and daring. Oh, did I mention compet- itive prowess and years of dedication? Sounds like an Olympic qualifier to me! Surfing is also beautiful to watch and, yes, sometimes jaw-dropping. Even though the judging is partially sub- jective, there are criteria: commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive maneuvers, combination of major ma- neuvers, variety of maneu-
vers, speed, power and flow. Carissa Moore had met these criteria, especially on finals day. She bested South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag, who took home silver and is now retiring after a great career. (Side note: Bianca is the second tallest surfer on the world tour — men included — standing at

sa, taking the gold home ... to Brazil! Italo Ferrei- ra obliterated the crazy storm surf with high airs and hard carves that would break most human bones. He beat Japan’s (via Cal- ifornia) Kanoa Igarashi, who grabbed silver. And, finishing with bronze was Australia’s 6-foot-3 Owen Wright. Yes, the tour’s tall- est talent.

Thank you so much for sharing your time with me!
It was a wild three-day ride all the way to gold. The surfing competition started on day one of the Olym- pics and didn’t stop till we got the gold. Indeed, a large tropical cyclone named Nepartak — swirling off Japan — sent big storm surf on finals day. Our surfing Olympians were up for the challenge.

            Dear Hearts,
In life all you have is your integrity and your word.
Trying to run a business based on false pretenses is absurd.
Don’t make promises on which you can’t follow through.
Otherwise pretty soon nobody will believe you.
Sincerely,
Bryce “Saimin Jr”
