Local Nonprofit Launches Hotline
West Oʻahu residents can do their part in helping to keep beaches and ocean eco- systems clean through local nonprofit Sustainable Coast- lines Hawaiʻi’s newest pro- gram. Titled Marine Debris Rapid Response, the initia- tive was designed to remove derelict fishing nets (ghost nets) that wash up in coastal areas around Oʻahu.

“Ghost nets are terrors in
the waters and on the coast- lines of Hawai‘i — posing threats of entanglement to wildlife and ripping apart coral reef ecosystems in our nearshore waters,” states executive director Rafa- el Bergstrom. “SCH has a decade of experience re- moving these hazards at our large-scale cleanups, but we wanted to create a pro- gram that could respond to reports by residents and vis- itors in real time.”

The community can get in- volved by calling 833-4DA- NETS (833-432-6387) to report abandoned nets. Be sure to include the type of debris, a description of it, a pin location or nearest street address, landmarks, approxi- mate weight and size, as well as your name, phone number
