usband and wife Ken and Jewelz Lee know full well how martial arts can positively impact a person’s
life. The Lees, who call Mililani home, thought Waipi‘o — specifically 94-530 Ukeʻe St. — would be the perfect place to open a training facility and celebrated with the grand opening of United MMA Hawai‘i in 2015. “For us, the philosophy is that martial arts is a life skill,” says Jewelz. “We give children that head start in life, learning to defend themselves, and empowering them with that knowledge of self-defense boosts their self-confidence, which trickles into so many different areas of their lives.
“Even mom, who is loading up grocer- ies, she’s not always going to have her hus- band or son there to defend her.”
