The folks at Waiʻanae’s MAʻO Organic Farms re- port that they planted about 950 pounds of seeds and grew 261,782 pounds of veggies in 2020 — a 43% increase from the previous year. In other news from that neck of the woods, Eman- uel “Manny” Miles joins the team as the equipment maintenance technician. It’s a full-circle moment for Miles, as he participated in the farm’s youth leadership training program nearly 20 years ago. “Throughout my career, the end goal has always been to give back and support farmers. High School Athletes Are Able To Practice
High school sports could be making a come- back, now that the state Department of Education has released its guidelines for restarting athletics pro- grams — which is good news for the Marauders, Sabers and Hurricanes.
“This is the first step in our gradual approach to restarting high school ath- letics in Hawaiʻi.”
On March 8, schools that had in-person or blended learning in place (and fell within the state’s learning model parame- ters) were eligible to begin workouts and practices.
While this bodes well for young athletes want- ing to get back onto the court or on the field, the status of games and com- petitions are not yet set. According to DOE offi- cials, each island league/ association will make those determinations.

“It is essential to the physical and mental well-being of students that they be able to return to athletic activities,” states DOE deputy superinten- dent Phyllis Unebasami.
