 May 6 was the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship in Fairfax, Virginia, and our is- lands were blessed to have the University of Hawai‘i men represent our state in the finals for the fourth consecutive year.
Throughout this exciting season, Stan Sheriff Center averaged nearly 7,000 fans in attendance, and it’s an understatement to say that Hawai‘i fans are amazing! Supportive dress codes down to the clear bag rule, kūpuna being pushed in wheelchairs by younger generations and keeping the love of the sport alive, hand- made signs and posters with the players’ pictures and personalized sayings like “Greece Lightning” and “Air Galloway,” Hawaiian flags and ti leaf pompoms wav- ing in the stands, and hot hands ready to “viking clap” for that heart-pounding Aloha Ball that brings everyone to their feet. Let’s not forget “The Aunties” who generously show up with lei to give not only to our team, but the visiting team as well, and are oftentimes adorned with their school colors. These impressive

The love for this sport and this team was made evident on Senior Night when we said goodbye and mahalo to six se- niors. Nearly everyone in the sold-out are- na stayed to honor them, and thousands at home witnessed the greatness we were bestowed with by these players during their time at UH Mānoa. I think we were all holding it together until Cole Hogland allowed us to show how we really felt about them graduating and leaving our court. But their work was not done.
These talented players have brought our state together, they’ve given us hap- piness and so many reasons to cheer, their aces and “roofs” have put smiles on faces, they have been examples of sportsman- ship and camaraderie, and the best part about them is their gratitude and humility.
So thank you, Hawai‘i, for showing support for this group of outstanding in-
