On March 24, we received a call from our pal, Pua Aiu, homeless coordinator at De- partment of Land and Natu- ral Resources, stating that an adult dog and puppies had been abandoned. Our outreach crew was in another area and Pua offered to take the dog and puppies home for the evening while we worked on their placement. That night, she suddenly came across a small, black elder dog standing and looking weak in the middle of the road. Thankfully, she stopped and picked up the lit- tle blind dog. Not only did she bring home three deliberately abandoned dogs earlier in the day, she also opened up her home to the elder dog in hopes to locate his family. Amazing! We would like to also mention that Pua adopted two dogs from us and is the proud paw- rent to cats, too.
All four dogs were safe and fed. We reached out to our pals at Fur Angel Foundation and in another collaborative effort, we were able to place the two abandoned puppies in their foster care program. Often our groups work together to save the lives of dogs and we would like to give a paws-up shout- out to our FAF ‘ohana for all they do in the community.

According to Pua Aiu, “Officer Humphreys and I know how challenging keeping and caring for pets can be when one is house- less. We are thankful to be able to work with K9 Kokua to offer houseless pet owners an option where they know their pets will be loved and hopefully find forever homes. I’d also like to thank my neighbors who named Einstein and helped in the search. Being able to return KoChan to his owners was one of the best birthday presents ever.”

While the abandoned adult dog (Einstein) awaited a fos- ter home, he was seen by our vet on Sunday to address his medical needs. Later that day, Pua also brought the blind el- der dog to our vet and he was scanned for a microchip.
We were elated to discover he had one, along with a fam- ily who filed a lost dog report for “KoChan.” Pua gracious- ly offered to drive him home where she was greeted by a relieved woman who not only thanked her through joyful tears, but she gave Pua a do- nation so another dog could receive help. The day began with an act of cruel abandon- ment and had been outshined by good people performing acts of kindness with the common goal of helping dogs. This feels phenomenal!
