12 MIDWEEK FEBRUARY 8, 2023
Between lesson plans and homework, Katie Meadows, a former Hawai‘i Department of Ed- ucation teacher, didn’t have time to stop and think about the state of the world. It took raising keiki of her own to re- alize the future was looking bleak — and she needed to do something about it.

Grass Is Always Greener With Meadows
“During that time (as a stay-at-home mom), I thought about how I wanted to run my household and that meant healthier choices, like less chemicals and cleaning prod- ucts,” says the Kaimukī resi- dent. “I learned more about healthier lifestyle tricks and that led to more greener, sus- tainable home hacks. And the more that I learned about it, the more I realized that there weren’t places in Hawai‘i where I could find the prod- ucts that I was looking for.”

(hence, the store’s name), like dish soap, shampoo and conditioner, and laundry de- tergent, with items that don’t rely on plastic containers. For her, it’s not about overhauling every aspect of your life, but rather believing “progress over perfection” is a good

As the operator of a small, local- and woman-owned business, Meadows readily shares just how much she re- lies on her community. Take, for example, the fellow female entrepreneurs who operate in the same turquoise-col- ored Kaimukī building. The like-minded ladies act as a soundboard for Meadows’ ideas and offer solace when she needs it.
“I think this is an important piece to the puzzle and I think it would be valuable for the community to know ... I was only able to make this happen — this gamble of taking a risk to do a career change — be- cause I do live in a multigen- erational home, which means I live with my dad. Because I don’t have to pay a mortgage, I was able to take that financial risk and I’ m really apprecia- tive of that.”
Thus, Meadows’ other baby, Every Day Better by Green Meadows, was born. Located at 1223 Koko Head Ave. Ste. 2, the eco-conscious shop sells “practical and cute” home goods and gifts that are thoughtfully designed and sustainably sourced.

rounded by them because there’s a positive energy that we want each other to do well, and we’re genuinely interest- ed in and promote each other’s businesses,” she says.
“In my opinion, plastic is probably the most challenging part of creating a greener fu- ture just because it’s so prev- alent, cheap and convenient — it’s everywhere,” she adds. “Because it doesn’t decom- pose safely and some people think it can cause health prob- lems, I wanted a place where people can shop for things for their home or to give as gifts without having to worry about plastic.”
To further her transparency, Meadows shares that she lives in a multigenerational home — and credits it to her success.
