as a substitute teacher at Kai- lua Intermediate School. On a recent school day, as I slowed down to dismount my bike on KIS campus, I lost my bal- ance, fell and fractured my leg near my ankle. I felt embar- rassed. Dazed and somewhat shocked, my bicycle on top of me, I saw people arriving.

Sandra Togashi Kailua
Dear Sandra,
My prayers go out to you as I hope you are finding time to rest and recover. Vice principal Joseph Wood says, “As Ms. Togashi stat- ed, at Kailua Intermediate School, we truly value and care about every current, fu- ture, or past member of our KIS ‘ohana and communi- ty. At Kailua Intermediate School our school’s vision is to develop learners who are empowered, compassionate, and inspired for the future, and these courageous stu- dents demonstrated these values remarkably. We are incredibly proud and hon- ored to have students and staff members who share and encompass so much alo- ha! Go, junior Surfriders!”
On Sept. 28, I got locked out of my car at Costco gas station and my phone, wal- let and keys were in the car. Mahalo nui to Pete Bernier for taking the time out of his
Five thoughtful KIS sev- enth-graders — Phoebe, Hi‘ilei, Emma, Braelynn and Tatum — rushed to my rescue. These caring, loving, attentive students helped me up, walked me, my backpack, helmet and bike to the classroom, and checked on my injury. Grati- tude overwhelmed me as pain and massive swelling grew.
Thank you very much to KIS security guards Wyatt and Ian, vice principal Joe Wood and student Dharmakaya who assisted in the classroom while my neighbor, Rudy Ahlo, gave me a car ride to urgent care. Thank you to Kristen Kane. who gave me a ride to Adven- tist Health Castle for X-rays, and Tina Yee-Hoy who spe- cial-delivered my bike to my home. I truly felt priceless and supported.
Those beautiful 12-year- old urgent responders, plus adults, who helped me after my accident deserve commu- nity accolades! Mahalo to the seventh-graders’ parents, too. Together, we strive to share values embedded in programs like Foundation of ALOHA and Choose Love. Pure aloha
