Through these “Get Your House In Order” columns you readers are learning more and more about my sometimes crazy but mostly normal family. Sometimes it’s a wonder how we all function harmoniously as a family unit. For us, one big key is communication and robust dialogue.
One topic of some of our most robust discussions was about life insurance. I absolutely abhorred life insurance and could not fathom why anyone should profit from my death. My husband and other family members, on the other hand were absolutely convinced that life insurance was a smart choice. Whenever they brought up term and whole life insurance, we would robustly discuss the pros and cons.
Once I brought a co- worker to my house for a family dinner and he was mortified. He thought my entire family was fighting, but actually we were just talking normally while preparing the food. We all love and respect each other so when we speak to each other it comes from benevolence. We are frank, genuinely concerned and not shy at all when we don’t agree. The space may be loud, but it is a safe space, an open space, and a space for all views.

me or to both my husband and I, what would happen to our child? It is said that together, people can move mountains. In this case the mountain was my opinion of life insurance.
and preparing for my child’s future, as well as getting my affairs in order. I wanted to make sure that my financial obligations were not a burden to my child and that he would be well taken care of.

Fifteen years ago, I felt there was no need for life insurance. But extensive and detailed discussions with my financial planner (and family) created the opportunity for me to exchange ideas and learn what others were doing and why. So, when the time was right, I had a pretty good idea of what I needed. I was looking towards the future
