and happy lives. RHS gave me the foundation for all I did in my profession. Yet, the finest thing about RHS was our classmates and lov- ing friendships we shared as a diverse student body. After 63 years, we still cheer our magnificent football players for the state high school foot- ball championships they won in our sophomore, junior and senior years. They made us so proud of our school!
A special mahalo nui should also be given to Doris’ hus- band, Wilbert, aka Willy (RHS Class of ’56). He had the chal- lenging task of raising their two sons in Hawai‘i while Doris attended Arizona State University to earn her doctor- ate in education. Willy’s con- tinuous support was invaluable for Doris to achieve her many goals in life.
She was also the recipient of local and national awards, among which are the College of Education Distinguished Alumnae, Hawai‘i Okinawa Association’s Legacy and NASPA Legacy awards.
“Huge thanks to Alex Uyeda for the letter, Bert Kobayashi for the hall of fame nomination and Sha- ron Hicks for keeping our beloved class connected. I humbly accept the honor on behalf of my awesome, talented, accomplished classmates. Special aloha and gratitude to Roosevelt Alumni Foundation presi- dent Garrett Ogawa and the RAF board for their amaz- ing dedication and support of RHS.
Doris was recognized by the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents for her 40-plus years at UH as an administra- tive and educational role mod- el and champion of students. She was the first female vice president for student affairs, and then served as interim chancellor.
Throughout her career, Doris has exemplified inspi- rational leadership through compassion and kindness. She is indeed a remarkable, dedi- cated and gracious “Rough Rider” with a lot of class.
She served on many nation- al organizations, and commis- sion and accreditation teams, as well as a consultant in var- ious states, the Pacific Islands and Asia. Most notably, she was the first woman of color and first Asian Pacific Island- er to be elected president of the National Association of Student Personnel Adminis- trators.
Doris is truly a remark- able woman who perpetu- ates strength, compassion, generosity and genuineness. I am sure that those who have met her will agree with the beautiful sentiments you have highlighted. She truly isoneofakind,andanam- bassador of doing good in our world.
“Congratulations to all 2022 RHS Hall of Fame in- ductees. I’m humbled to be honored with you.”
To Doris, a heartfelt mahalo nui from the RHS Class of ’58. You make us proud!
