   Book Pick Of The Week
Author J. Ryan Stradal captivated me with his two sustenance- centric books: Kitchens of the Great Midwest (2015) and The Lager
Queen of Minnesota (2019). I picked up Lager Queen fifirst, and the writing was so engaging — it helps that I love a good beer every so often — that I fifinished the novel within two days. So
enjoyable was it, that I quickly searched for other books he wrote, and found out his Kitchens of the Great Midwest won numerous
awards. I borrowed that one next and was not disappointed. Both have as their foundations the day-to-day of real-life family
dynamics — abandonment, divorce, death, fifinancial hardship, jealousy — and interwoven in those narratives are anecdotes about
the food and drink. Stradal separates chapters by individual characters, and seeing how they all come together beautifully at each conclusion
is satisfying.

Mally still uses it at 17 years of age. My grandma taught me how to quilt, and though I have the (mediocre) skills, I have yet to fifinish an actual blanket. The hexagon flflow- er quilt I started more than

he beauty of art is that it can manifest in any creative expression,
“I stopped counting how many quilts I made when I reached 150,” she says. “When you make a quilt and give it away you give part of yourself along with it.”
The community has a chance to view handmade works of “fabricated” art
a decade ago is still incom- plete in my closet.
The latter sentiment rings true. My paternal grandma has been quilting for as long as I can remember, and our family has handmade (seriously, she doesn’t use a sewing machine) creations that remind us how much she loves us. She even made my dog, Mally, a quilt when she was a puppy, and
If you have minimal skills like me or are starting from scratch, there are a number of ways to try your hand at quilting. First, Adams recom- mends checking out Hawai‘i Quilt Guild, which got its start in the 1980s. Though its 100- plus members haven’t met up in-person for a couple of years, they do host monthly Zoom meetings.
help and show you what to do,” explains Teresa Sakura- da, Hawai‘i Quilt Guild show committee member.
Hawai‘i Quilt Guild is al- ways looking for new mem- bers, and one big benefit of joining is access to various classes. The other perk is being able to learn from and socialize with other quilters.
“The best way to learn to quilt is ... taking a beginning quilting class or joining one of the quilting bees and bringing your project to sew, as there are so many supportive ex- perienced quilters willing to
Membership is $30 a year (July 1-June 30), and applica- tion instructions are online at hawaiiquiltguild.com.
In terms of supplies (and classes or expertise), Sakurada and Adams both recommend checking out local businesses like Calico Cat in Kaimukī and Kuni’s Island Fabrics on South King Street, as well as material stores like Kaimukī Dry Goods or Hawaiian Fab- rics, as well as the islands’ Fabric Mart locations.
“(My) favorite thing about quilting is the support we give each other in our quilting jour- ney,” explains Adams.
