The Hawai‘i Culinary Education Founda- tion provides students at Hawai‘i’s six community college culinary programs access to the best knowl- edge and ingredients through classes presented by local, na- tional and international chefs. HCEF also provides specialty ingredients, broadening stu- dents’ culinary horizons.
What’s Cooking With HCEF
By Tom Mullen, chairperson of Hawai‘i Culinary Education Foundation
The 24-year-old HCEF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, coordi- nates and sponsors a series of Center of the Plate work- shops, master classes and high school student mentor- ship programs. HCEF also develops master classes for working chefs and food ser- vice professionals.

The foundation’s roster of presenters includes Sheldon Simeon, Kevin Lee, Vikram Garg, Ed Kenney, Chai Ch- aowasaree, Keith Endo, Santa Miyoshi, Jackie Lau, Jonathan Mizukami, An- drew Le, George Mavroth- alassitis, Alan Wong, Wade Ueoka, Michelle Karr-Ueoka, Robynne Maii, Bao Tran, Lee Anne Wong, Mark Noguchi
and Kenneth Lee. HCEF has also sponsored many visit- ing experts, including James Beard award-winning Seattle chef Renee Erickson, Boston chef Joanne Chang, Seattle chef Melissa Miranda and in- ternationally recognized nu- trition expert Marion Nestle.
On April 26, HCEF will host its 22nd annual golf tour- nament, presented by Repub- lic National Distributing Co., as well as platinum sponsors Pacific Transportation Lines Inc. and Aloha Freight For- warders.
HCEF programming has reached more than 46,000 culinary students and pro- fessional chefs since 2006. Culinary students take notice when an award-winning chef explains the importance of fundamentals and hard work.
This is the main fundrais- er for HCEF, and Hawai‘i’s leading chefs and hospitality professionals join together for a fun day of charity golf at Ka- polei Golf Course.
