6 MIDWEEK MARCH 2, 2022
The Spirit Of Giving Takes Flight
   Dear Darah,
I was on a flight and we were about 30 minutes in the air when my daughter had an episode. She could not breathe. Flight atten- dant Austin Coen assisted her. On the PA, he asked whether there was anyone with medi- cal qualifications on the flight. Two people showed up: Nor- mandie Dudley and Shawn Hampton. Normandie assessed the situation and helped to sta- bilize her, while Shawn assist- ed on the side.
Dear Lei,
this story of kindness and initiative from a stranger who saw a person in need. Sending blessings and good wishes to you both. I hope your ankle is better and you’ re on your way to a healthy recovery.
Is there someone you’d like to thank? Mail letters to MidWeek c/o Mahalo Nui at 500 Ala Moana Blvd. Ste. 7-500, Honolulu HI 96813, or email mahalonuiwithdar- ah@gmail.com. Include your name, where on the island you reside, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of the person you’ re thanking so she can contact him or her.
Especially now with travel picking up again, flight crewmembers must be even more vigilant while sacrificing their own safety on the frontline to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely.
Also, to Austin and the oth- er flight attendants there that helped to make her comfort- able, I want to send them a big mahalo. I hear and read so of- ten about people needing med- ical care on flights, and I am so grateful that on their flights they, too, have medical people that are willing to come for- ward to assist. Thank you.
My prayers and aloha to your daughter and your ‘ohana. It is situations like these that showcase how flight attendants per- form under pressure and the intense training they go through to protect the safety and well-being of all travelers.
hospitality happens every day on most of our flights. Glad to spread the aloha spirit.”
I wanted to extend a sin- cere and grateful thank you to a gentleman in a black ve- hicle who parked next to me at Zippy’s Kāne‘ohe. I made a mistake on the payment portion of my online order
and couldn’t reach anyone for over an hour so I could correct it. I hurt my ankle just a few minutes earlier and needed someone to bring my order to the car. I was able to get his attention and explain the situation to him. I’m sorry that I didn’t get his name. He went in and brought an em- ployee to me. The employee was very apologetic and im- mediately took my payment
and got my order. I gave her a small tip and asked her to please give the customer a token of my appreciation. I hope she was able to find him and give it to him. I truly ap- preciated his taking the time to help me.

Dear Carol,
Thank you for sharing
Especially now with travel picking up again, flight crewmembers must be even more vigilant while sacrificing their own safety on the frontline to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely. Austin Coen says, “Thank you for your letter. Even with these uncertain times I enjoy my job as a flight attendant; even more lucky to be sur- rounded by trained crew members and medically trained passengers.
