   Bucky Ludgate was only 3 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. From the Big Is- land, he needed specialized treatments at a hospital on O‘ahu — a terrifying experi- ence for his family, given the urgency and all of the uncer- tainties associated with child- hood illness and a relocation.
Keeping Families Close

 This rang true for Bucky’s mom, a single parent in the military at the time of Bucky’s diagnosis. She and Bucky found Ronald McDonald House their home-away-from-home on O‘ahu. She said it made “all the difference in the world” to her, knowing that Bucky’s grandpa could stay at the house with him during her deployments.
“I knew Bucky was safe, loved and not alone,” she said.
This year, we will cele- brate our 35th anniversary of keeping families close. Our first house opened on Judd Hillside Road in Mānoa on March 27, 1987. Since then, more than 14,000 families have spent more than 136,000 nights at the Ronald McDon- ald House Hawai‘i — some for just a few days; others, for many months.
Bucky Ludgate and his mother, Nicole, stayed at Ronald McDonald House Charities Hawai‘i in 2003. Bucky is a healthy teenager now.
