8 MIDWEEK DECEMBER 22, 2021
Saying Thanks To Our Frontline Friends
While many things have been put on hold over the past couple of years, there were people who did not experience a break from serving our com- munities, neighborhoods and islands. Our frontline heroes have worked overtime to care for the health and well-being of us all, giving comfort that we can get through this together.
wanting to go on a hike on our layover. Before we landed, a gentleman gave us a map and circled all of their favorite hik- ing spots. Not only were they kind enough to give us a map, they offered to take us on a hike. We went on a beautiful hike with a few of our passen- gers and ended the day with new friends.” —Caren Oten- briet, flight attendant
“My sister surprised me with a beautiful handmade Christmas wreath using plants from our parents’ garden. It’s a wonderful way to remember them at this time of year.” — Maya Yamagata, president of Hawai‘i Veterinary Vision Care
“ʻThank you for all that you do’ goes a long way when said to any health care worker or first responder these days.” — Kathleen Kozak, MD, depart- ment of internal medicine with Straub Medical Center
“We take pride in servicing our community as ‘ohana. Many patients have referred their family and friends to our practice, which is the ultimate compliment for me and our team.” —Derrick Abe, optom- etrist
“I want to mahalo my as- sistant, Jay Galdeira, who ran- domly blesses me with break- fast, lunch or even cut flowers from her garden, upon arriving to my classroom in the morn-
ing for work.” —Toni Romias, special education teacher
“I am extremely thankful for my ‘best teas,’ a Starbucks group that I belong to that raised funds to help out with funeral arrangements for my brother. He passed away leav- ing his wife and four kids with- out a husband and father. This Facebook group is filled with amazing people. I love you all.” —Salamasina Kawaau- hau, air traffic controller, Ho- nolulu Control Facility
“It always makes all of us at King Street Pet Hospital feel appreciated when we receive positive comments of grateful- ness from pet owners for taking care of their pets. In addition,
our clients have been very kind to us by gifting us with many types of food and treats.” — Richard Fujie, co-owner of King Street Pet Hospital
“We truly have the best cli- ents. We have had numerous people donate money or sup- plies to help other people who cannot afford the care their pets need. It’s a tough time for everyone and still people are willing to help others. True aloha.” —Alan Obara, Kalihi Pet Clinic
We are blessed in so many ways to be surrounded by people we can trust with our health and families. These are just a few members of our caring community who self-
lessly serve us even during a pandemic. If you want to recognize and mahalo your healthcare and frontline friends, please write to me about them. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas with the ones you love.
