If you’re looking for more local content, Bishop Museum Press has much to choose from. Those who enjoy the great outdoors will love Amy Greenwell Garden Ethnobotanical Guide to Native Hawaiian Plants: And Polynesian-Introduced Plants. It’s chock full of pretty much every type of flora and fauna in the islands, and includes their cultural uses. The photos are stunning, and Noa Kekuewa Lincoln did a great job of putting it together. Then, for keiki, there’s Hawaiian and English Cross-Age Learning Picture Vocabulary Book. The coloring book is back in print after a brief hiatus and features more than 850 words that describe everyday items in the Hawaiian language. Visit bishopmuseumpress.org.

Gary Kawakami’s Ke ola ‘aina (The Living Island) is set in ancient Hawai‘i and tells the story of a young man who swims between islands and develops a connection between nai‘a (dolphins) and kohola (whales). It’s fiction and reminiscent of mythology passed down from generation to generation. It’s also educational — with each Hawaiian word, there is a definition or explanation, allowing readers from all over to learn more about the culture. Find Ke ola ‘aina on Amazon.
Wai‘anae’s Buddy Vidal tells the story of local diver/paddler Kahele Anderson, who also lived a secret life within the local criminal underworld. Anderson
had a near-death experience after surviving a nearly fatal spear diving
accident, and on the cusp of life and death, Anderson says he visited hell.
Vidal’s Cast Into Fire: The Kahele Anderson Story and Related Events follows that journey. “It took me over 10 years to find everyone involved in his story and to obtain his medical records for evidence,”Vidal explains. “This journey in itself was very supernatural and I can only attribute the book’s completion to God.”Find Cast Into Fire at Barnes & Noble.
Many might remember David Louie, the country’s first Chinese American state attorney general, who served in the position under Gov. Neil Abercrombie. Well, he wrote a memoir about his time in public service: From the Desk of the Attorney General. I haven’t yet had a chance to read it, but am interested to learn more about the period’s most pressing issues: Native Hawaiian rights, internet safety, same sex marriage, human trafficking and more. Find the memoir at legacyislepublishing.net or bookshawaii.net.
