Putting Others First Is Music To The Ears
   Dear Darah,
First of all, thank you so much for your column, which provides a fo- rum for people to show their appreciation for others. For me, this happened on Oct. 20 when I was at Big City Diner at Windward Mall placing a takeout dinner order. When my order was ready, the server informed me that a gentleman had paid for it before he left. She said he’s a regular custom- er whose initials are K.B.
I was so grateful for this kind person, a total stranger, for lift- ing my spirits when I needed it the most. Thank you, K.B. What goes around comes around.
Carolyne Kazuko Kāne‘ohe
I’m praying for you and your husband during this difficult and stressful time. It’s inspiring to read about people like K.B., who have the perception and kindness to make someone’s day with a random act of generosity.
Dear Darah,
I, and many others here at
the Arcadia continuing care facility, want to thank Arkie Koehl (another resident) for his innovative and enjoyable arrangements of beautiful songs on the piano. He has been entertaining us three evenings a week ever since the COVID isolation began, and his efforts have made a real difference. We walk away humming instead of sitting alone in our rooms in a state of boredom. In all these months, he almost never re- peats himself. Amazing. Thank you, Arkie. You matter.

Is there someone you’d like to thank? Mail letters to Mid- Week c/o Mahalo Nui at 500 Ala Moana Blvd. Ste. 7-500, Honolulu HI 96813, or email mahalonuiwithdarah@gmail. com. Include your name, phone number and, if possi- ble, the phone number of the person you’ re thanking so she can contact him or her. Darah Dung hosts “The Pet Hui” and “Island Driver,” both on Spec- trum OC16.
I was stunned. Then, I was flooded with emotion because Iwasonthewayhomefroma long day at the hospital where my husband lay critically ill.

been allowed on the premises since the onset of COVID last year. The pandemic has also had the unexpected result of dragging me out of a virtual 60-year ‘retirement’ from the
