4 MIDWEEK DECEMBER 1, 2021
               Personal Tribute
What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of former MidWeek columnists Bob Jones and Jerry Coffee. Last week, we had the honor of running a tribute lovingly
submitted by Coffee’s son, Jerry Coffee Jr. It was beautifully written and reflected on his father’s honorable service and family, including his marriage to former MidWeek colum- nist Susan Page and the gratitude Capt. Coffee had for his MidWeek readers. I last saw him while visiting him at Pali Momi Medical Center, where he was recovering from an- other health “close call,” probably a complication from his experience as a Vietnam POW. That’s when I met his son, Jerry Jr. I always held the senior Jerry as one of my heroes and have always felt you can tell the measure of a person by the character of their children. Jerry Jr. works for IHS and shares the same kind of compassion as his father. For me, that confirmed what I already knew: Capt. Gerald “Jerry” Coffee was a great human being. Rest in love, Jerry.

be a figure skater in my driveway.”
Here at MidWeek, we have had the great fortune of giving our readers columns written by some of the most talented and iconic personalities in Hawai‘i. Too many have passed into their next journey: Eddie Sherman, Kimo Akane, Uncle Tom Moffatt and our own staffer Paige Takeya.

          HHair’s The Deal
ow much hair is too much to lose? I mean, we all know it’s natural to lose hair over time, but this past year, the concern over hair
loss is up. I hear it from clients, friends and staff — and it’s stressing them out!
After some research, apparently it’s happening to everyone. It’s called “telogen effluvium,” and it’s caused by stress or trauma. When stressed, up to 70% of new hair growth halts to conserve “energy” for other bodily needs, causing unprecedented hair loss.
If this is something that’s bothering you, remem- ber that your hair doesn’t define you. You define you — and it helps to know we are all going through it together. Hopefully, 2022 will bring our full manes back to help us “Rogaine” our hair confidence.

Last week, former MidWeek columnist and newsman Bob Jones passed away at home due to health complications. Bob was known for his daily newspaper and television journal- ism career long before he came to MidWeek, but in the more than 25 years he served as our premier columnist, his name became synonymous with MidWeek. He was a voracious writer, sometimes submitting several columns to choose from for us to run. He was never without an opinion or take on something. And whether you agreed with him or not, he was smart, resourceful and had a great sense of humor. We did not always agree on his material, but he understood that we are a business and could always find a balance that did not compromise his journalistic efforts.
On one of the occasions when we met for lunch, I came to know and respect him for many things. Without question he loved his wife, fellow journalist Denby Fawcett, and he was very proud of their daughter, Brett.
Jones also had a deep love for the people of Hawai‘i. Nothing significant happening in the state missed his scruti- ny, especially when it impacted the lives of those he interact- ed with throughout his career. Bob will be remembered for many things, but for me, I credit him with giving MidWeek a certain kind of legitimacy. Once he came on board, we were no longer called “junk mail.” Rest in love, Bob.
